Accordion Punk

Accordion Punk Accordion, or a squeeze box, is a very popular instrument in Russia. It is relatively simple to operate, easy to transport, it is loud enough to overshout local quarrels and fights, and last but not the least - it has a belt which makes it difficult to loose if you want to have a break for another shot of vodka.

URATSAKIDOGI

'Uratsakidogi is a state of comprehension of different circumstances in life, projected onto what other people call 'music'' – Egor Gogenator - the leader of the band responds laconically to a question about the band's name.

Igray, Garmon'!

"I bought a guitar and started to play, told Misha to buy bass ... Then Misha called one day and said: you know, fuck the bass, I've got accordion, let me play it! We tried - it all went much better than we expected ... "

Babsley

Visually Babsley are six good looking, singing and dancing girls. The style of the show is defined by the girls as babsfolk ethno-punk. Traditional rock rhythm section is babsleyed with accordion and sax.

Nol'

Before Nol’ there were no bands who had chosen accordion as the leading instrument in their music. The repertoire of the group consists of different genres – from rock-n-roll to hard and heavy. Of course some of them are more successful, some

VOPLI VIDOPLYASOVA

Visually Vopli Vidoplyasova is rather interesting picture – four bullies from some Borsch-ham who are just ready to sing an anthem to the heroic football exploits of Dynamo Kiev.

Russia

RussiaRussia is not only the country of Lenin, Gagarin, T-34 and AK-47, there is much more going on there than oil-pumping and a search for mysterious bears foreign tourists claim to walk around the streets, what? - have a listen....

THE ZVERSTVO

"I love demented rock music and it doesn't get much more demented than The Zverstvo. Loud, abrasive and deliciously funny, the vocalist of this Russian avant-rock ensemble screams its lyrics over the top of pounding drums, guitar, and a saxophonist ... "

N.O.M

Formed 1987. Probably the best rock band to continue the tradition of Russian surrealism. NOM's music is a fascinating combination of traditional Russian melodies, rock, pop, progressive rock and even opera.

Ayktsyon

Like many other bands, Auktsyin also was infected with punk, but unlike the others, got 'healed' in a proper way - expanding its musical and poetic language to somewhere, few of us ever been before.

URATSAKIDOGI

ИГРАЙ ГАРМОНЬ! / PLAY ACCORDION! [rus.]

Igray Garmon’! are from those to whom the term originality can be applied without any second thought. These guys have played hundreds of gigs all around the country, transforming the gloomy atmosphere of punk clubs into eccentric  dance parties. The music of the band is a cocktail of expressive accordion and loud guitars multiplied by the hurricane rhythm section. Stylistically it stretches from ska, dub and reggae to folk, psychobily and punk in all its possible incarnations.

Q: Guys, why are you so soar? Lets get pissed! – I thought my call would cheer the Piter’s crowd up.

I.G:  I promised not to drink before the gig, - sadly pronounced Roma. It was clear that the guy sticks to his words.

Q: But why?

I.G: Interesting to see what is gonna happen. We are for about 20th time in Moscow and there wasn’t a single time when we played sober.

Q: How did you come to the idea of playing punk-rock with accordion?

I.G: It all started with a guitar, - Roma became serious – me and Misha (accordion player) went to the same school, and I know that he was attending some music school as well. We all used to listen punk-rock and especially three bands where in out top: Dead Kennedys, Exploited and Sex Pistols. It was about 10 years ago. Approximately at that time we came to an idea of playing punk-rock ourselves. I bought a guitar and started to play, told Misha to buy bass and thought that the drummer would not be a problem. Then Misha called one day and said: you know, fuck the bass, I’ve got accordion, let me play it! We tried – it all went much better than one could expect…

Not as crap as Exploited, joked Mitr (Guitar player)

Than a bass player joined us, he said if we would not play accordion he would never joined. He said its so cool and original. He made us believe in ourselves, although himself quit in three rehearsals

Q: You band plays quite weird and uncomfortable music, which is difficult to stick anywhere. Do you suffer because of this…?

I.G: No, many of the people who came to our gigs, said to me: you don’t really play punk, its not really ska either, fuck knows what it is! – said Mitr. If not to stay with one radical style its very difficult to get support of the public.

Yes it is our problem that we play on the margins of a style and are not fit into some standard. People who love punk, ska and folk come to our concerts … and then they are disappointed, said Roma.

I think we should release a decent record and it will all be where it should.

Q: Summarising the year, which bands impressed you?

I.G: The biggest surprise – Uratsakidogi. When we played together in Jerry Rubin I just fell in love with them. In general I think in Moscow the scene is more interesting.

I like Poimannye Muraviedy, Lyudi Lopesa, Iva Nova, PTVP, Spitfire, Ska Jazz Review, Tequilajazzz, Marksheider Kunst.

All from Saint Petersburg! You are a chauvinist!

Sasha, the bass player, who was silent all this time suddenly added.

Disco and jazz.

Yes jazz rules, added Roma.

I think there two main streams in contemporary music – disco and glam!

And we have glam as well, surprisingly entered the conversation Mitr, in a t-shirt with Kafka on it.

Q: But…sorry, - I was confused – you need to have clothing for glam. (Everybody loughed)

I.G: We need to have clothing for everything.

Indeed, even for disco.
