Anarcho-Punk

Bands Associated With Anarcho-Punk

v3anus

Freak-anarcho-punk formation from Grodno, full of radical non-conformism and sparkling irony stretching the music from NY hardcore downtunes to sunny ska and reggae beats.

CONTRA LA CONTRA

Uncompromising anarcho-punk band from Grodno with female vocals. 'Bad Girls Choose Freedom', 'Passport Control', 'A Prick not Punk' - that's what they are singing about. Recorded two albums: Demo, 2001 and Not a Word about Politics, 2002.

DEVIL SHOOTS DEVIL

"It's fucked up living in here not only because it's almost impossible to go abroad but also because we lack social contacts, we are being watched we can't say what we want to. And those who aren’t satisfied with the way things are often disappear."

BELARUS'

Imagine the country, where the president himself defines his ruling style as authoritarian and which was labelled by US state secretary Condoleeza Rice as an 'outpost of tyranny'. Add to this the ancient history, European culture and educated people. What will you get? Right! - An explosion of the most uncompromising and politically engaged punk.

It all started in Minsk and Grodno, places which became the centres of music counterculture in Belarus'. Such bands as Hate to State from Minsk and Deviation, Contra la Contra and Antiglobalizator pioneered the scene and set the style for the Byelorussian anarchist punk - simple melodies, clear and straightforward texts, aggressive vocals, open anti-state protest and radical anti-consumerism. That's the vibes of the illegal festivals and underground concerts driving the scene for already more than 10 years.

Byelorussian anarcho-punk is not all about music. In the end of the 1990s – beginning of 2000s anarchist samizdat explodes. Zines such ash Antifaschick, Don't Panic, Left Hander, Rebro Zhestkosti, Bez Namordnika, Zayabok, Skid Row in Minsk and Ken-gu-ru, Br-r-r-r and Desertir in Grodno - more than a noise? - sure it is!
